U.S. Government Cracking Down on Military Fraud
When the government cracks down on alleged fraud by military contractors, military personnel are also accused of committing fraud, whether in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.
December 09, 2011 /Law and Legal PR News/ -- A recent Department of Defense (DOD) report claims that $1.1 trillion in defense spending over the last 10 years has gone to defense contractors who defrauded the U.S. government. When the government cracks down on this alleged fraud by military contractors, military personnel are also accused of committing fraud, whether in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.
According to the DOD report, more than $500 billion has been paid to 300 defense contractors who were involved in civil fraud lawsuits. In addition, over $250 million has been paid to defense contractors convicted of criminal fraud.
While many of the largest defense contractors like Lockheed Martin contributed to the fraud disclosed in the DOD report, many smaller companies with more limited contracts with the U.S. military were also involved. Moreover, officials are not just targeting defense contractors; increasing numbers of military personnel also are being prosecuted for military fraud.
Military fraud allegations can be wide-ranging and sometimes vague including:
- Over-billing
- Bribery
- Providing defective products or not disclosing that the products are defective
- Providing products or services not in accordance with specifications
- Not properly inspecting products
- Theft of government property
- Unauthorized sale of government property
- Mail fraud
- Bank fraud
- Larceny
In one of the more high-profile cases of military fraud stemming from U.S. military operations in Iraq, an Army captain and procurement officer was convicted of receiving kickbacks for helping defense contractors receive more than $930,000 in contracts with the military, partly by forging bids. The captain was sentenced to three years in prison, and his experience demonstrates how the government is increasingly targeting military personnel for allegedly engaging in fraud with military contractors.
