January 26, 2012 /Law and Legal PR News/ -- The Categories and Health Effects of Workplace Stress
Apart from sleeping, most Americans spend the majority of their day at work. They wake up early, commute, and spend the next nine hours earning a living. Considering the amount of time Americans spend at work, they should be aware of how environmental factors at work can negatively impact their health.
Eating properly, exercising on a regular basis, and avoiding alcohol or other drugs are all conducive to a healthy lifestyle; but, managing stress at work can be just as important for a person's long-term health.
Types of Workplace Stress
Occupational stress is not limited to reaching production goals or dealing with upset customers. The Canadian Centre for Occupation Health and Safety has found workplace stress can result from numerous situations, including:
-Lack of autonomy
-Isolation
-Unrealistic performance demands
-Relationships with supervisors, coworkers and subordinates
-Verbal or physical harassment (including sexual harassment)
-Job security
While some level of stress is normal, our body's natural responses to it are not meant to cope with debilitating amounts. Once stress reaches this level, its negative impact on a person's health becomes apparent.
Health Effects Caused By Stress
Scientific American interviewed Ohio State University Professor Janice Kiecot-Glaser regarding the effects stress can have on the body. She believes stress makes a person's immune systems less effective because stress actually elicits an immune response itself. This can lead to all types of complications, such as:
-Increased risk of heart disease from chronic inflammation
-Increased risk of autoimmune diseases
-High blood pressure
-Higher levels of stomach acid and risk of ulcers
-Higher risk of osteoporosis
While this list is not exhaustive, it is evident that stress caused by one's occupation can be very serious.
